North Coast Old Rasputin

Winter seems to be hanging on a little longer here in the Midwest than any of us would like. After a taste of 50, even 60 degree days, we were back to the 30s with the temperature slowly climbing all week. Supposedly the weekend it going to bring 50s (the normal temperature around here this time of year) but, of course, rain. Maybe that is a sign to the type of season the Cubs will have this year. 😉

These cold, crappy days always draw me towards bigger beers. I just have to remember to not eat so much before said craving. Usually the next big step is deciding which stout or porter will fit the profile for the evening.

For some reason Old Rasputin Imperial Stout by North Coast Brewing Company called my name quite quickly. The bottle I opened was a 2009 bottle that my Mom had given to me as a Christmas present in 2009. Yeah, each year she gives me beer and she is getting better and better at it.

Old Rasputin is everything you look for in a Russian Imperial Stout (RIS). It is big, bold, but not too sweet. Many RIS beers use so much grain that the beer becomes a cloying mess. This one has good balance and, possibly, the one flaw, is a bit too much roasted/burnt malt. Nonetheless a solid beer that should be on your list of beers to have. Enjoy!

Need to Celebrate: Old Rasputin XII

north coast brewing old rasputin xii

Old Rasputin XII is a Russian Imperial Stout brewed by North Coast Brewing Company to commemorate the breweries anniversary. This was a beer that I anticipated for quite some time and grab a total of four bottles (two for friends and, it ended up, being two for me).

I have wanted to taste Old Rasputin XII since the day I purchased but drinking at work that day didn’t sound like a grand idea. I wanted it to be for a good occasion and cellar the other for a couple of years. At full price this is some roshe run costly liquid paradise, I wanted to make sure it was worth it.

My neighbor across street, Miles, is an American craft beer lover. I use that term here loosely as he gulps his beer like a large mouth bass would inhale a crayfish, but he always drinks good stuff. His wife has been pregnant with their second child, so I thought him and I could split the bottle to celebrate.

We did this past Tuesday as his wife gave birth to a bouncing baby girl on Monday afternoon. Yeah. I served at cellar temperature. Of course Miles eight ounce edition was down in two “small” sips. Mine, I savored. Some damn good stuff. So complex. So impressive to the senses. Now I really enjoy Russian Imperial Stouts but this is the best I have had to this point.

I know that I talk about cost of beers a lot but I think in these economic times it is something on most of our minds. I think the world of this beer, even received the go ahead from the wife to purchase another bottle or two from my favorite beer store, but I couldn’t pull the trigger. There is a ton of beer I want to try out there and I purchased two six packs and a bomber for $5 more than the price of one 16oz of Old Rasputin XII. I think I made a good decision.

Look for Two Beer Dudes at Great Lakes Beer Fest later today in Racine, WI. Enjoy!

Beer store visits are the highlight of my week. Especially when I can score four bottles of Old Rasputin XII from North Coast Brewing Company! Albeit two of these bottles are for beer drinking buddies: Ed and Mark. That still leaves me with two. I will definitely have to share one with Rich and then cellar the second for a while.

The only drawback I can see to this beer: the price tag. air jordan 3 femmes At $21.99 per bottle it is a little steep and $100, with tax, for four is ludicrous! Of course I paid it but that doesn’t mean it isn’t on my mind especially with the brewery hop this weekend that will tack onto the tab.

I didn’t even go to the liquor store to pick up the Old Rasputin XII as they hadn’t called to tell me it was in yet but just for my normal weekly visit and a chance to talk beer with Travis, the beer buyer for the store. I was on strict rules from the “boss” not to purchase anything because of this weekends’ brewery hop. Of course I had to get something, I picked up a bomber of Bam Bière by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales after enjoying a confusing Oro de Calabaza last Friday.

I look forward to trying both beers and sharing my thoughts in more beer reviews. Enjoy!
