Hodge Podge About Beer

Friday, September 4th, 2009

September in Illinois has brought on new higher taxes on liquor. Beer, believe it or not, got hit the lightest: four cents or so, while spirits got nailed with a ninety-seven cent tax increase. That is nuts. But when you live in crooked Illinois you have to cover all those past governor legal bills some how.

Oberon by Bell’s Brewery, Inc. has long been one of my favorite beers and easy my favorite summer wheat beer. I look forward to the warming sun of the springtime as I know the sun on the bottle will soon be on my favorite beer store’s shelves. free run 5.0 femmes Well, I just received a phone call that they are now selling to to the local supermarket and it is on sale for a $1.50 less per sixer than at aforementioned beer store. I don’t care about the money (who am I kidding, I am dirt cheap), but the fact that they are starting to commercialize this beer to the masses, ugh, just kills me. I know that the distributor brings the beer to wherever they want in Illinois, but Bell’s is making enough that it can be distributed to those outlets.

I guess this hits hard because of the two year or so hiatus Bell’s took from distributing to Illinois because of the liquor laws. I had to drive to Indiana or Michigan to get my fix. Shit, when they first stopped, you got a 10% bootleggers discount if you purchased a sixer at Bell’s and had an Illinois license. Oh, how I long for the days gone past.

Strangely enough, the last case of Oberon I purchased seemed to be a little off. Not the same zing of citrus. Did they change the recipe? Did they cheapen it? Needless to say I am not too happy about this predicament.

On a positive note, the invitations for Two Beer Dudes Inaugural Oktoberfest are finished and are being sent out. I will get out the final beer list over the extended weekend and show off the beautiful invitations. Enjoy!

Weekly beer store visits come at the right time each week: in the middle breaking up the mundane craziness of the office. This one is no different and after a rough day in the office Tuesday, I couldn’t help but have fermented hops dancing in my thoughts. What liquid goodness would the distributor bring to my favorite beer store? Let’s see.

The wife asked me to pick up another case of Oberon by Bell’s Brewing Co.. She wanted to make sure she had enough to last her into the colder months as it is her favorite beer. I am still in IPA mode and looking for a few to add to the free run 5.0 collection for when her friend from work comes over.

I have about six or seven IPAs already for that evening and have warned my wife that he may want to bring his wife as a DD. Now the total is up by two more as I picked up 60 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales and Dry Hopped Pale Ale by Founders Brewing Co.

This get together with my wife’s friend is still over 3 weeks away. I am counting them down as I look forward to an evening surrounded by my hop buddies: IPA. Enjoy!

Good Beer Drinking Weather

Friday, July 31st, 2009

As the weekend comes upon us, I can’t help but wonder if the weather in August will be as kind as this July. Chicagoland has experienced very mild weather compared to the usual 20 days of 90 degree weather crap we are so accustomed. Today is probably one of the nicest days of the month and what better way to end July and bring in August than a few beers on the patio making some smores on the fire pit.

Although I almost didn't have this one, I had a change of mind as it was still thirsty for refreshment. Really an outstanding Russian Imperial Stout!

The toughest part of the evening will be deciding which beers to drink. Do I go with the laid back approach and drink beers that I don’t have to rate and enjoy the evening thoroughly with some Oberon? I currently have a 12 pack of Oberon and the wife and I could polish that off no problem. Or, do I go more sophisticated and drink some of the 25 – 30 beers that are in my fridge that I have never had? air jordan 13 femmes That means work: pouring, smelling, tasting, and writing about beer. Hold on, did I just call that work? Who I am kidding? Oh, this is going to be a good night.

I don’t think I will decide on what to drink tonight until five minutes after I arrive home and grab the first beer that jumps of out of the fridge and slaps me in the face. Have a good safe weekend and play outside. Enjoy!
