Half Acre Announces Release of Sticky Fat American Dark Ale

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

With recent news coming out of Half Acre that the brew master is leaving to chase after his own dreams and endeavors, I didn’t think I would hear much, at least for a while, about releases coming out. Well I was wrong as Half Acre announced the release of Sticky Fat American Dark Ale on Friday, September 3rd. The trick is convincing my wife we need to go out there for a taste.

I am curious to see what is in store for this relatively new Chicago brewery as they have done some nice co-operative beers and a few of their own quirky beers. In the Chicago area they already have a good following, now it is a matter of the new brew master proving he can keep the charm rolling forward. Enjoy!

Double Daisy Cutter Pale Ale to be Released by Half Acre

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Half Acre Brewing Company will be hosting the closing night of CCBW on Saturday, May 22. Already a big list of American craft breweries are lined up to participate (from the Half Acre blog):

Half Acre
Piece
Three Floyds
Rock Bottom
Gordon Biersch
Revolution
Dogfish Head
Goose Island
Metropolitan
Two Brothers
Sierra Nevada
Lunar
New Belgium

In another batch of news from Half Acre, they will be releasing Double Daisy Cutter Pale Ale as part of the CCBW festivities. It seems they are officially calling it Doble Cortador(?). From their site:

In honor of Chicago Craft Beer week and the fact that we wanted to brew this beer, we’re popping out the Double Daisy Cutter Pale Ale / Doble Cortador. It was an experiment we hope will yield some tasty results. We’re looking at a beefed up ABV and enough hops to recede your gums.

This beer will be available on draft and in 22′s. We will be sending it out to the world in small quantities.

Having all these new breweries in the Chicagoland area is starting to make for a bevy of American craft beer news in my own backyard. Enjoy!

Lil’ Davey Totes From Half Acre

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Half Acre is releasing a short run beer for the Irish in you named Lil’ Davey Totes. The beer will only be available in growlers at the brewery with the short run dry Irish stout probably not lasing long based on small production.

From their blog:

Barreling through the fog came Lil’ Davey Totes.

Lil’ Davey Totes is a 4% dry irish stout ideal for the festivities at hand.
This is a draft only beer available for growler pours at the brewery. It was a small batch that should only last through St. Patrick’s day.

I wonder how tired my wife gets of me talking about beer all the time. Enjoy!

I was born a natural red head but my hair is now blonde. Maybe I can bring an old picture?

Also coming out of Half Acre is news that Invasion is fermenting away. Invasion is a collaboration between Half Acre and Three Floyds and it a lager. There is a good chance that it will be out sometime in March according to Gabriel Magliaro, the owner of Half Acre.

I am really looking forward to the new beers that Half Acre has coming out. I also emailed Gabriel and he said: “We have a lot going on for 2010. A new release every few weeks. Collaborative brews. Big beer dinners. CBC in April. Having as much fun as we possibly can.” Keep an eye out. Enjoy!

Half Acre Tour

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

A visit to Half Acre Beer Company was one of my easiest brewery hops to put together. Chicago, just about anywhere in the city, is a mere one hour from home. A tour set for 1:00pm puts us in the range of the kids falling asleep and/or playing DS the entire time that I will be on the tour. Of course the wife is along for the ride, I wouldn’t leave them in the car by themselves. ;)

I am not going to go crazy here as you can read the entire story over in brewery hops, but Gabriel Magliaro, the owner, gave the tour so it was thorough. The brewery is actually two stories with their grain and barrel aging being done on the second floor. The tour started about 15 minutes late as people continued to pour (no pun intended) into the brewery past the 25 person limit, quickly passing 70. No worries beer was served and continually served throughout the entire time of the tour (about an hour). Gabriel even radioed for more beer to keep the crowd pleased. Now that is service for a free tour.

I talked home brewing with several others visitors and didn’t hear a ton on the tour. I plan on going again so I can hear about the history and capacity of Half Acre. Enjoy!

Half Acre Magnus Worth A Full Acre

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

half acre beer company magnus

There are some beers that I purchase out of pure curiosity. Magnus by Half Acre Beer Company fits perfectly into to that motif. In this case I was curious about the brewery and what they had to offer, since they are the new kid on the block while being readily available, somewhat, in the Chicagoland area. The curiosity also extended to the fact that Magnus is a Schwarzbier, a style that I haven’t found much of in the American craft beer industry (to this point, maybe I have also subconsciously avoided).

I opened Magnus with blind faith that I would enjoy this beer as I had Daisy Cutter Pale Ale, possibly placing Half Acre as a quick up and comer on the craft beer scene. Off with the cap, let’ try this sucker out.

Pours a perfect shade of brown with a single finger of tan foam. Frothiness develops as the foam dissipates leaving some sticky blotchy lacing. Roasted, toasted, caramel, and nutty malt stimulates the senses. Coffee comes in the finish of the beer; both on the nose and palate. A nice creamy mouth feel with a medium carbonation and slight alcoholic twang. Very drinkable and completely enjoyable beer. It is a shame it is a one shot. 8/10

Half Acre is quickly building its’ reputation with me. I have a bomber of Big Hugs Imperial Stout that I cannot wait to taste and rate. Enjoy!

Half Acre Visit Tomorrow?

half acre beer company big hugs imperial stout

Based on Rich’s twit from yesterday I wouldn’t mind getting a taste of ’09 Baume at the brewery. Also, according to their blog, they should have released Big Hugs, their American imperial stout. It is the perfect time of the year to go have my first at the Half Acre Beer Company while picking up a bomber and possibly a growler of Daisy Cutter.

Everyone have a happy and safe New Years Eve. Enjoy!
