Beer Review Pages Updates

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The site is slowly but surely taking shape as I continue to struggle to find time to juggle enjoying beer and coding beer. 😉 Drinking beer is much more fun but I have to continue pushing the site forward. The deadline of an October is definitely premature. Aren’t deadlines made to be pushed back?

The latest changes to the site are a 99% finalized beer review pages. You can also select a beer and see the individual beer review page, which is also close to completion.

The navigation will be the next part of the site I knock. I have the some of the design elements in place it is just a matter of a little css and the navigation will come magically to life. I would say the site, in terms of graphics/css, is 20% complete. Enjoy!

Two Beer Dudes Taking Shape

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Two Beer Dudes, the site, is starting to take shape in terms of fitting into the new design. The demo of the new design, which is pretty much finished outside of the navigation, can be visited at http://www.twobeerdudes.com/page/index2.

The current links within the navigation are done for the time being. Rich and I have other plans for what we want to add, time is just limited. We had originally planned to have them for the October launch, but we just can’t fit them in as the October official launch might have to be moved back until November.

95% of the functionality on the site is finished but everything that is needed to create an account and review a beer is finished. The add a beer section is finished also. I will be working, this week, on the functionality to add an establishment (brewery, beer store, beer bar, etc).

The only way this site will be successful is with participation, so please go and create an account, review some beers, and provide your feedback on the site and any bugs that you run into. Enjoy!

Two Beer Dudes Home Page

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Two Beer Dudes home page is just about done being marked up. The navigation design is still to be decided on, the footer is about 90% finished, while the seasonal indicator is about 50% figured. Otherwise the rest is what it will probably be when the site goes officially live in October (hopefully).

Check out the design: http://www.twobeerdudes.com/page/index2 and provide your feedback, we welcome it. Enjoy!

Updated Site Design/Layout

Two Beer Dudes is getting closer to having a “real” site. The design is about 85% done and Chris has passed it off to me so that I can start implementing the backend code that I have written into the frontend design. It has been a battle to say the least.

I have written about 95% of the backend code for the site, it is just in search of linking and styling. I am sure there will be some new code that comes up as I start actually putting the pieces together. I organized everything mentally and I am surprised that I have this much done. The old noodle is humming along on high octane.

Not that anyone’s hopes are up but I don’t believe the site will be completely ready for an October, 2009 release. It will be close though.

In the meantime I am working on the design on the new frontpage: http://www.twobeerdudes.com/page/index2. Enjoy!

Two Beer Dudes Design Night

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Last night was a whirlwind of ideas, beer, modifications, beer, direction, and beer. Chris, the guy doing our design, stopped over for beer, pizza, and a hard core night of site design. The pizza was of the frozen variety and my wife was mad at me for not spending the dough on real pizza. 🙂

We nailed down the contents of the entire site, which pages will be live on launch, and even tossed around ideas of future updates. I have my coding work cut out for me. Rich will be busy working on content.

Rich and I had many a beer and the high alcohol had fun with our ability to make sound decisions until we, more or less, just stopped really making strides on the site. We capped the evening off with a Gordon by Oskar Blues. One damn yummy beer. Chris only had a couple of Miller Lites (makes me cringe to type that) as he had to work this morning.

Overall we accomplished more than in any meeting to this point and we definitely have a clear path for the October release. Now we just have to find time to get it all done. Enjoy!

Two Beer Dudes Logo

Monday, August 10th, 2009

As October seems to quickly approach we are still without a logo. Luckily Rich knows a guy whose wife is a designer. She is working on a logo as we speak. Hopefully we will have something this week.

We are the usual people that designers hate in that we have no idea of what we want for a logo. The site is suppose to be fun, so I said a fun logo. Rich wants classy. That was the extent of our advice to her. Not much in my opinion to base a logo on. I think we will both know what we don’t want when we see it. Like I said, a designers worse nightmare.

With that said, Chris is finally getting some free time to start working on the design and I will hopefully have an updated mock up by the end of the week. I am really excited if we can coordinate the mock up with he new logo by Friday. Then I will feel like we are making headway.

Until the next site update, Enjoy!

Site Design: First Mockup

Two Beer Dudes first mockup of website.

Two Beer Dudes first mockup of website.

It has been three weeks since I met with Chris to discuss the web site and directions for the design. In the meantime I have been on brewery hops and working on the back end coding of the site. Pages are starting to interlink and, to my knowledge, I believe all links actually go somewhere and are free of bugs (fingers crossed).

As I have been working the thoughts of what Chris has cooked up have constantly over taken my body. air jordan 12 femmes This morning as I opened my email I noticed an email, with an attachment, from Chris. The heart quickened, the palms started to sweat all because I knew this was a mockup. Like a five year old on Christmas Day I moved my mouse as quickly as possible over the link so that I could pull up and read the email. I hastily read the words as the attachment was the glimmer in my eye.

He could of sent a picture of dog crap and I would have thought it was awesome. I didn’t care, I just wanted to see some progress. Indeed he made some and the mockup is in the early stages but we have a great foundation to work with. Hopefully things will move a little more quickly and we can launch the site on time. Enjoy!

Two Beer Dudes Beer Review Rating System

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Two Beer Dudes has been trying to find a simple beer review rating system since Rich and I hatched up the idea of the site some eight months ago. Over our many discussions of what we wanted the site to be and do, we decided to make the site fun and have a rating system that was easy to use and understand by even the most casual of American craft beer affectionados.

As we thought about this and threw out tons of ideas, we decided that the rating scale should be a grade based on overall feel for the beer and the necessity or lack there of, to have another one of the beers in hand. We wanted this scale to be similar to other rating scales that people had seen and used. We also wanted the scale to be pliable to the point in which a person might be able to insinuate their own values, after all the site is about your personality and subjective views of the beer. So the 10 point scale was born.

The 10 point scale is just from 1 to 10, air jordan 10 with 1 being the lowest rating and 10 being the highest. As I mentioned before: something you are familiar with from other areas of life.

Below is my attempt to explain the ten point beer review rating system in my words just to give some general guidelines. Before the site goes live in October, I would imagine my thoughts on the ratings might change, again.

  • 10 – Perfect Beer: A beer that you would drink anytime, anywhere, and all the time. Should have a crown placed around the neck of the bottle!
  • 9 – Superior Beer: The brewer must have read my mind when coming up with this recipe. I think I function better when I drink it.
  • 8 – Excellent Beer: This is some awesome stuff. Throw this over a bowl of cereal and you can’t help but start the day off right.
  • 7 – Above Average Beer: Somebody knew what they were doing when they made this beer. Would drink it often and if it was seasonal, I would get it each season.
  • 6 – Slightly Above Average Beer: A good beer that I would have again. Just a sliver away from making me say “wow” out loud.
  • 5 – Average Beer: Exactly! I would have the beer again but only occasionally. In the right scenario, I could have a few. Nothing makes it stand out.
  • 4 – Slightly Below Average Beer: Something about the beer never allowed me to turn the corner into liking it. I might have another, sometime, but wouldn’t seek it out.
  • 3 – Tolerable Beer: A beer that was okay at best and because I am trying to be kind. I personally wouldn’t buy it for myself again but I may drink a free one.
  • 2 – Not That Good Beer: Could barely swallow the beer, but only since I paid for it. But I would never have another.
  • 1 – Yuck Beer: This wasn’t pleasant to drink at all. Possibly an old or contaminated beer. I would choose a root channel over this again but the Novocain might help the flavor, especially if I was drooling uncontrollably.

Remember when you write a beer review, more than likely, you are taking your first taste of a beer, possibly only, and that there is a lot that factors into the reason you felt the way you did when you wrote a review. Some factors: mood, feelings, like or dislike of beer style, food, other beers drank before, etc. air jordan 11 These are the reasons that Rich and I will never put a review on the site below a 5. We will try and give the beer another chance on another day.

One last thing: when tasting beer only have about 2 to 3 ounces and drink beers of the same beer style. Split a 12 ounce bottle between friends, formulate your own opinion and then share with each other. Each of you may have found something different within the confines of the glass container. Really try to enjoy the beer for the style that it is and appreciate the effort that the brewer put into making the beer. Trying to be unbiased will give the best overall chance and rating for a beer. Enjoy!

Design/Layout Discussion Results

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

The design/layout meeting turned into a really good few hours of laying out in cement the content of some of the most important pages on the site: home, reviews, user profile, etc.

After some deep dish peperoni pizza (two slices) it was time to get busy, so of course we each grabbed a beer and the question and answer session began. Chris did a great job of probing for the information that he needed and I tried to show him all the non-designed pages I had coded but still needed that front-end touch.

I am hopeful and wishful that we will have a mockup within 10 days so that I can start making the site come to life and look a little more inviting.

Rich did stop by around 9:00pm, after his sons baseball game. We talked about the direction of the design decisions I had made and had a quick few beers to help keep our thoughts and minds clear.

Design/Layout Discussion

Friday, July 10th, 2009

As we continue to try and push the forward, Two Beer Dudes will be meeting with a web designer to talk about the direction of the design and layout for the site. Neither Rich or myself is any type of web designer, so what better than to bring in a co-worker whose job it is.

Naturally we will be slopping down some pizza (deep dish) and throwing back a few brews. The beer, is of course, for more inspiration. 😀

I currently have been doing all of the coding which, if you have ever done so, is a ton of work from the ground up. The only aspect of web development I can’t do: web design. Thus the involvement air jordan 5 of Chris (yes, the same Chris that brought me back some Capital that I mentioned in an earlier blog).

Hopefully a week or two after the meeting we will have a mockup so that I can get some of the functionality that is already there up on the site:

  • logout
  • create membership
  • verify membership
  • add a beer review
  • edit a beer review
  • admin cms system

I am currently working on the membership profile. Tonight’s discussion should help pan out exactly what the profile functionality will be.

Once we have a mockup in hand, I will try and get it up on the front page of the site quickly. Stay tuned as the site is evolving every day. Three months until official launch! Feel free to drop us a line with your thoughts.
